McDonald's Fried Apple Pies

A McDonald's copycat: a homemade apple pie filling encased in puff pastry and deep fried to flaky perfection, then dusted with cinnamon sugar. Recipe by Sara Welch.

Ingredients

17.3 oz box (490 g)puff pastry sheets, thawed
3 cups (about 360 g)Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced
6 tablespoons (75 g)brown sugar
1/2 teaspooncinnamon
1/4 teaspoonnutmeg
1/8 teaspooncloves
2 tablespoons (28 g)butter
1 tablespooncornstarch
1/2 cup (100 g)granulated sugar
1 tablespooncinnamon (for the sugar coating)
optionalcaramel sauce, for serving
as neededoil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Cut each sheet of puff pastry into 4 pieces. Place on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
  2. Place the apples, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves in a pan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer.
  3. Cook for 6-8 minutes or until the apples are tender. Stir in the butter.
  4. Whisk the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and add to the apple mixture. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until the filling has thickened.
  5. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the apple mixture onto one side of each piece of puff pastry. Brush the edges with water and fold over to make a rectangle.
  6. Crimp the edges of each rectangle with a fork.
  7. Chill the pies for 20 minutes in the freezer.
  8. Heat 3 inches (7.5 cm) of oil to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Cook 2-3 pies at a time for 5-6 minutes, or until golden brown and the pastry is cooked through.
  10. In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon.
  11. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar all over each pie as it comes out of the oil.
  12. Repeat frying and sprinkling with all remaining pies.
  13. Serve immediately, with caramel sauce if desired.
