Ingredients

1 1/2 cups (360 ml)warm water
1 tbsp (12 g)sugar
1 1/8 tspyeast (or 1 package active yeast)
2 tbsp (30 ml)vegetable oil
1 1/2 tspsalt
4 1/2 cups (560 g)bread flour, plus extra for the board
4 tbsp (55 g)butter, melted
1 tspgarlic powder
2 tbsp (12 g)Parmesan cheese
1/8 tsporegano

Instructions

  1. Combine the warm water, sugar, oil and yeast in the large bowl of a mixer or a food processor. Add 4 1/2 cups of flour and the salt and process until the dough forms a nice uniform ball. Place the dough in a bowl that has been sprayed with nonstick spray.
  2. Cover the bowl with a towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about an hour. Place the dough on a well-floured board and roll it out into a large rectangle. Cut in half horizontally, then cut vertical strips of dough about 1 1/2 inches (4 cm) thick.
  3. Roll the strips of dough into logs. Place the logs on a greased baking sheet and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes. You should get between 20 and 24 breadsticks. Melt the butter and stir in the Parmesan, garlic powder and oregano.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Just before baking, brush the breadsticks with the melted butter mixture. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Brush any leftover butter topping on just before serving.
