Taco Bell Red Sauce

A copycat of Taco Bell's mild red sauce — a smooth, tomato-based enchilada-style sauce seasoned with chili powder, cumin and garlic, used over burritos, enchiritos and tostadas. The original clipping was a link/photo page only, so the method below is a faithful reconstruction of the standard simmered red sauce.

Ingredients

1 can (225 g / 8 oz)tomato sauce
1 cup (240 ml)water
1 tbsp (8 g)chili powder
1 tspground cumin
1/2 tspgarlic powder
1/2 tsponion powder
1/2 tsppaprika
1/2 tspdried oregano
1/2 tspsugar
1/2 tspsalt

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the tomato sauce and water until smooth.
  2. Whisk in the chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, oregano, sugar and salt.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring often.
  4. Reduce the heat and simmer 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened and the raw spice flavor has cooked off.
  5. Taste, adjust salt and let cool. Store refrigerated and use over burritos, enchiritos and tostadas.
